Description
Beautiful Mexican or New Mexican Santos - Bulto set into a Nicho. 19th century. Missing one arm, missing fingers on the remaining arm. Remnants of a tin attachment nailed to the top of its head. Appears to be glued to the Nicho at the bottom.
Possibly a work by Frank Applegate (1881-1931) as there are remnants of block-printed wallpaper on the interior and looks similar to pieces we have seen by him. He often took antique Southwest and Spanish Colonial religious statues and nichos and reworked - combined them into his own works.
SIZE: Height of Santos : 10 " / Nicho : 17.25 " x 8.5 " x 4.5 "
PROVENANCE: New York collection.
CONDITION : Good antique condition with losses, a well-developed patina, oxidation to the wood and painted surfaces, rust on the nails and metal parts. The photographs show the condition, wear and patination.
