Item Details
Description
Etching, together with a group of ephemera: Artist: Ralph M. Pearson (1883-1958). Title/Description: Procession of figures in a bleak landscape. Signature: Signed lower right, and inscribed "Plate number thirty-seven"; "Second State"; and dedicated: "To my adopted parents - Christmas 1917". Date Created: c. 1917. Size: 18in x 14in. Medium/Ground: Etching. Condition: Overall good; tipped on to cardboard at top margin; toning, light soiling/foxing to margins. Together with ephemera related to Pearson, who trained as an etcher in Chicago and co-founded the Chicago Society of Etchers in 1910; wrote, studied, and taught art/design analysis. Pearson was a friend to Harriet Dean (formerly of The Little Review), and the dedication on the print is possibly written to her and her partner Elsie Whitaker Martinez, or possibly to Elsie and artist Xavier Martinez. The ephemera consists of: 1.) A New School, New York brochure for study sessions on "Modern Art in Home Furnishings under the direction of Ralph M. Pearson", n.d.; 2) a typed copy of letter to students, with notation in Dean's hand, n.d. 3.) A design workshop announcement on Pearson's letterhead, n.d. 4.) Pearson design workshop newsletter, env. addressed to Dean, 1950. 5.) A typed letter on Pearson's letterhead, to Dean, Micaela Martinez, and Elsie ("Pal, Kai and Pellie"), including reminiscences of time shared in New Mexico, together with two workshop brochures and a small signed etching ("Live Oak", 8in x 4in, 1922), 1943. 6.) A chatty letter to Pal and Pellie, including memories of Carmel, 1941. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).
