Woodrow Wilson Signed 1913 Military Appointment for Cavalry Captain
Partially printed DS

A signed appointment by President Woodrow Wilson, prior to the First World War. 1p of vellum, measuring 15.75" x 19.5", Washington, D.C., dated March 18, 1913. A military appointment signed "Woodrow Wilson" and countersigned by Lindley M. Garrison as Secretary of War. Appointing "John P. Hasson?Captain of Cavalry." With patriotic motifs at the top and bottom margins and a blue paper seal at the bottom left corner. The document has flattened folds with very light warping. Faint edge toning. Bold, clear signature.

World War I broke out nearly one year later, in July 1914, following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. With much of Europe being pitted against each other, Wilson adopted a stance of neutrality and fought to keep the United States out of the war. In early 1915, Germany sank three American ships, but Wilson chose to view the incidents as accidents, rather than push Americans into a war across the ocean. After the interception of the Zimmerman Telegram and numerous additional attacks on American ships, however, Wilson could no longer turn a blind eye and the U.S. entered the war on April 6, 1917.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
