Model 1840 Contract Musket by Lemuel Pomeroy,
Pittsfield, Massachusetts, c. 1844.
42 in., .71 caliber round barrel marked at the breech 'U.S./JCB/P' ('JCB' is the mark of Springfield Armory arms inspector Joseph C. Bragg) and '1844' on the breech plug tang; flat lock plate with pointed convex tail marked '1844/U.S.' and with a spread wing eagle over 'L.POMEROY' below the brass pan, the inside of the plate unmarked but with sub-inspector marks '4' on most interior parts, the comb of the cock marked 'M'; walnut stock with no visible markings; iron furniture of proper form, the butt plate marked 'US' on the tang and the inside of the trigger guard bow marked 'C'; with sling swivels and steel rammer with flaring head and threaded end.

Lemuel Pomeroy is known to have delivered 600 stands of arms in 1844 (Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Later Years 1816 through the Civil War, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2007), p. 205).

Metal polished bright with a few areas of underlying pitting, the barrel has a small dent just above the center band; lock functions properly, bluing intact on the tumbler, bridle, and sear; stock is refinished and has a few small dings and dents and a small wood chip on the front end of the side plate mortice.
