Second quarter, 19th century; gouache, portrait of 19th century Maryland Statesman, in brass & glass oval frame, etched on verso, "Col. John Charles Groome June 8, 1800 Nov 30, 1866," in miniature lucite and wood display dome.2 x 2 1/4 in. John Charles Groome was Secretary of State of Maryland in 1838, was nominated for governor in 1857, and was one of five vice presidents of the Maryland State Conference Convention of February, 1861 that met in order to discuss ways to keep Maryland in the Union. He was a noted private practicing attorney.
