Description
Oil on canvas. Signed. Framed:24" x 20". Studying and painting in Paris at the time, Herbert became fascinated with Arthurian legend and themes. The Holy Grail is the most sought-after Christian relic across the ages. Believed to be the cup that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper & that Joseph of Arimathea used to collect his blood during the crucifixion. It often represents eternal life for one who drinks from it. Arthurian tales claimed that the cup was brought to Glastonbury in England where Sir Galahad led the quest to obtain the Holy Grail. Herbert's work shows his mastery of oils and his respect for the European tradition of painting historical themes early in his career. Herbert would go on to a prestigious career in NYC in illustration and later teach at RISD.
