James Herbert (1896 â€“ 1970). Excalibur, Arthurian Legend, circa 1920. Oil on Canvas. Dimensions: 12” x 14”. Original frame. Exhibition. label verso. Condition Good. J. D. Herbert was a student of theater and literature romanticizing the iconic heroes, leaders and protectors of society from past eras. This image is of Excalibur, the mythical sword of King Arthur that was attributed with magical powers and associated with the rightful sovereignty of Britain. The common tale is that the sword was given to Arthur from the enchanted Lady of the Lake and Herbert dramatically paints the sword emerging from the water in this rendering. Studying and painting in Paris at the time, Herbert became fascinated with Arthurian legend and themes. Herbert's work shows his mastery of oils and his respect for the European tradition of painting historical themes early in his career. Herbert would go on to a prestigious career in NYC in illustration and later teach at RISD.
