Oil on canvas. Unsigned. Framed: 28 1/2" x 30 1/2". Professionally cleaned & restored by American Art & Antiques, Swansea, MA. An Impressionist style Fall landscape sketch by Hope Smith. Hope Smith was one of the first graduates of the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence in 1898, and studied painting with its founder Mary Wheeler. Her art education was furthered with study at the Rhode Island School of Design; painting with C. H. Woodbury, at Ogunquit, ME; study with William Merritt Chase at Art Students League in New York; and finally, at Académie Julian, in Paris. During her life-time she exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Boston Art Club, Providence Art Club, South County Art Association and the Newport Art Association. She was a member of the Providence Art Club and the South County Art Association.Art critic Bradford Swan called her "a spiritual heir of the Impressionists". This is a New England landscape.
