Walter S. Feldman completed his art study with a BFA from Yale University School of Fine Arts in 1950 and an MFA from Yale School of Design in 1951. A student of Josef Albers, Feldman absorbed many of the concepts of Albers but turned to a more expressionist style and interest in symbols. Ironically, towards the end of Feldman’s life he did a series of Square paintings integrating his early exposure to Albers and his art concepts. Feldman began a 53-year teaching career in the Art Department at Brown University in 1953. During the 1950’s he was juried into over 15 museum print exhibitions, and was awarded the Print Prize at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1952. He exhibited at Kraushaar Galleries in New York City, immersing himself in the “beating heart” of the art world and introducing his early expressionism and abstract imagery to institutions and collectors. In addition to teaching at Brown and exhibiting actively in the first ten years of his career, Feldman won many awards, as well as a Fulbright Fellowship to Italy.
