1844 Civil War CAPTAIN Walcott OWNED Africa History Egypt de Gama SLAVE TRADE

Samuel Griswold Goodrich was an American author, better known under the pseudonym Peter Parley. Goodrich wrote a number of historical works – works on United States history, natural history, and history of animals. However, he also wrote a lesser known work on the history of Africa.

Lights and Shadows of African History is a 19th-century account of the history of the most iconic African countries including Egypt and Egypt antiquities. Other areas of interest include Mungo Parks voyages and travels, discovery of Madeira, Carthage and Barbary states, and perhaps most important of all the rise of slave trade on the African coasts.

The 21st Massachusetts participated in several of the largest battles of the Civil War, including the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. The most devastating engagement of the war for the 21st was the Battle of Chantilly, fought on September 1, 1862, during which the unit suffered 35 percent casualties. By the end of its three years of service, the 21st Massachusetts Infantry had been reduced from 1,000 men to fewer than 100. The regiment was a favorite of Clara Barton, the famed battlefield nurse.
