SIGNED BILLY RAY HUSSEY, NORTH CAROLINA EARTHENWARE FACE JUG,dripped alkaline glaze,globular form, titled "Roy Thompson / is 40", incised to underside, hand-modeled with applied ceramic eyes, a nose with pierced nostrils, rounded cheeks, a full beard, crooked mouth, and strap handle, with additional incised eyes to each shoulder with "Life" incised below. Additional marks to underside include "BH" and "November 23".Billy Ray Hussey (b. 1955), Bennett, NC.1989-1990. 8" HOA.
Provenance: From an Aldie, VA collection.
Catalogue Note: Roy Thompson, an antiques dealer from Glastonbury, CT, founded the Southern Folk Pottery Collectors Society in 1990. This face jug was commissioned anonymously for Mr. Thompson's 40th birthday.
