Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Piartal Cultural Complex, Highland Narino region, Narino culture, ca. 750 to 1250 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a sizable form known as a bullet amphora, so called due to its projectile-shaped profile. Negative resist techniques were used to create the geometric shapes: a resin was applied then the burnished surface was covered in a contrasting slip, the patterns revealed after the resin was removed. The motifs were probably inspired by the natural world and woven textiles. This sizable vessel served as a secondary burial urn; besides human remains, it may have contained personal belongings and other valuables made of precious metals or textiles to take to the afterlife. Secondary burial is the practice of reburying bones of the deceased after the body has decomposed, the urns might have then been interred in shaft tombs or beneath mounds or structures. Size: 10.5" W x 30" H (26.7 cm x 76.2 cm); 30.5" H (77.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Hyde Park, Massachusetts estate, acquired in the 1990s
