Less than 17000 Colt Navy revolvers were purchased by the US Army between 1855 and 1859. These '51 Navy's were purchased and issued to US mounted soldiers in the mid to late 1850s. 1856 records show that Model 1851 Colt Navies had been issued to 5 companies of mounted rifles and three companies of the 2nd US Cavalry that year. Between 1855 and 1859, 16,962 colt 1851 navy revolvers were delivered to the US Army. This 1857 produced example is very strong with sharp edges, crisp markings, matched serials, and gentle patina. No rust. No pitting. All the serial numbers match including the wedge. The cylinder scene is strong at about 60 to 70%. There are hints of case color on the rammer. Sub inspector initials are clearly present on the cylinder, trigger guard, and backstrap. The frame has a clear military US stamp below the Colts Patent mark. The barrel legend is ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITYThe lower right serif and the upright stroke of the N die in the word NEW was broken in 1857 and this barrel legend illustrates that fact. Also the letter I in CITY is damaged on this gun as well. New dies were put into use shortly after this one was made. The wood grips are solid and are properly oil finished. The cartouche markings are not legible. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect.
