Description
1850 era German American Turner decorated belt. The Turners, or Turnverein, were a paramilitary German-American athletic society, founded in 1848 in Cincinnati, which spread nationwide. They were German gymnasts, and athletes, many served in the Civil War. The 9th Ohio from Cinti was filled with them. The group was large and politically connected, and very pro military carrying distinctive Turner rifles with brass handled Bahn Frei (clear the way) saber bayonets. This needle point and leather belt has excellent color and condition and surfaced in southern Ohio. It is embroidered GUT FRISCH FROHLICH HEIL FROM FEBI . The large GUT and large HEIL embroidered on the belt is the Turnverein motto GOOD HEALTH. The other words translate roughly as fresh happy whole I do not know the significance of From Febi. A very similar GUT HEIL belt was sold at Cowan's in Cinti back in 2011 for $800. It was not as pretty as this one.
