2 Early Weymouth, MA Deeds, 1 Signed by Prominent Figure Samuel Thaxter - Grandfather of Benjamin Lincoln!

A pair of land deeds for acreage in Weymouth, Massachusetts, dated 1710 and 1724. The earlier deed, 1p, measuring 7.75" x 12", dated September 18, 1710, is an indenture between Edward Darby and Samuel Vinson, conveying six acres of land in Weymouth for £10. Signed and sealed by Darby, and countersigned by Edward Bate Jr. and Samuel Bate. A notation at the bottom states that the above was approved and acknowledged by Samuel Thaxter, dated March 4, 1714/15. The second deed, 1p, measuring 7.5" x 12", dated April 21, 1724, is an indenture between Stephen French and Samuel Vinson, conveying several partial lots in Weymouth for £20: Lots 53-57 and land in the Second Division. Signed and sealed by Stephen French, and countersigned by Samuel and Jonathan French. A notation at the bottom states that the above was approved and acknowledged by Joseph White, Justice of the Peace, dated December 13, 1725. Both documents have flattened folds, small holes, and rough edges. Moderate toning throughout, with foxing and soiling. Slight damage to the red wax seals. Boldly signed by all, very good.

Col. Samuel Thaxter (1665-1740) was a prominent figure in early New England history. In 1719 he was made a member of the boundary commission created to settle the division between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He became a colonel of the Hingham regiment of militia and later commanded the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. Thaxter also served in government, acting as a magistrate, justice of the peace, and delegate to the General Court. He became Hingham's most wealthy and influential citizen, and his bloodline continued to live on in history through his descendants. His daughter-in-law, Mary Hawke, became the mother of John Hancock, and his grandson, Benjamin Lincoln, was the first U.S. Secretary of War and second Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts.
