1698 Hingham, MA Land Deed Signed By Saml. Thaxter & John Zazall

A land deed for acreage in Hingham, Massachusetts, signed by Samuel Thaxter. 1p, measuring 14.5" x 10.75" (sight), Hingham, dated November 8, 1698. An indenture between John Lazall [sic "Leazul"] and Peter Barns, conveying eight acres of land in Hingham "commonly called the playne neck" for £30. Signed and sealed "John Lazall", and countersigned by Matthew Cushing. Signed twice by Samuel Thaxter as a witness and as Justice of the Peace. Framed to the overall size of 15.75" x 12.25". With flattened folds, small holes, separations, and chipping. Some repairs have been made with archival material on verso. Moderate dampstaining, toning, foxing and soiling. Boldly signed by all. Not examined outside of the frame.

Col. Samuel Thaxter (1665-1740) was a prominent figure in early New England history. In 1719 he was made a member of the boundary commission created to settle the division between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He became a colonel of the Hingham regiment of militia and later commanded the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. Thaxter also served in government, acting as a magistrate, justice of the peace, and delegate to the General Court. He became Hingham's most wealthy and influential citizen, and his bloodline continued to live on in history through his descendants. His daughter-in-law, Mary Hawke, became the mother of John Hancock, and his grandson, Benjamin Lincoln, was the first U.S. Secretary of War and second Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts.

John Lazell (1619-1700) was an early settler in Hingham, Massachusetts, believed to have arrived in the town from England around 1647. He became a Constable of the town in 1677. He married Elizabeth Gates in 1649, and the couple had 8 sons and 4 daughters. He died on October 21, 1700, in Hingham at 79. Numerous of his descendants went on to fight in the American Revolution. Additional spellings of his name have been found in various records, including Lazell, Lassell, Lasell, and Leazul.
