Description
Ratification and Implementation of the Massachusetts State Constitution, the Oldest Continuously Functioning Constitutional Compact
Broadside, "State of Massachusetts-Bay, In Convention", 1p, on laid paper measuring 10" x 15", June 16, 1780. Signed in type by James Bowdoin (1726-1790) as president of the constitutional convention. Flattened folds; reinforcement at verso; small loss at left blank margin and bottom edge; else, in near fine condition.
Very rare broadside announcing formal ratification of Massachusetts' Constitution by the Constitutional Convention. The compact is largely the work of John Adams, though he was joined on a committee appointed to draft the document by Samuel Adams and James Bowdoin. In addition to declaring when the constitution would take effect, the present resolution directed that elections be held for governor, lieutenant governor, senators and representatives.
