21 Charles Magnus Collector Trading Cards of Confederate Generals
A set of twenty-one trading cards of Confederate Generals produced by celebrated New York City printer Charles Magnus. All measure approximately 2.5" x 3.75", undated but circa the 1860s. Each card shows a bust-length, black-and-white image of the subject surrounded by an ornate red frame with the man's name in a cartouche at the bottom. Represented are Gen. T.L. Clingman, Gen. D.E. Twiggs, Gen. Benj. Huger, Brig. Gen. Hardee, Comm. Maury, Gen. John B. Magruder, Gen. John B. Floyd, Maj. Gen. A. S. Johnston, Gen. Parsons, Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, Gen. John C. Breckenridge, Gen. Henningsen, Maj. Gen. G. J. Pillow, Capt. Chatard, Maj. Gen. Gus. A. Smith, Gen. M. L. Bonham, Gen. Humphrey Marshall, Gen. Tilghman, Gen. Braxton Bragg, Comm. Hollins, and Gen. Buckner. Of varying sizes, with some clipped edges. Varying degrees of foxing, dampstaining, soiling, toning, etc. Some with bumped corners. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information.
Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a New York printing entrepreneur best known for his color lithographs of city views, song sheets, and maps. During the Civil War, he became famous for printing patriotic illustrations for stationery and transmittal covers, as well as souvenir trading cards.
