Description

Two Anti-Jefferson Davis Political Cartoons, Ft. Col. Ellsworth

A pair of cartes de visite depicting anti-Jefferson Davis scenes. Both measure approximately 2.25" x 3.375", n.p., n.d. There are no backstamps present nor any identifiers of an artist. The two cards are accompanied by a blue-lined sheet of paper with two 1861 J.D. flag stamps. With light wear and bumping to the card corners. Faint edge toning to both. Overall very good.

The first, entitled "The Result" or "Othello's Occupation Gone", shows a kneeling Davis before the Capitol building while a Union soldier (identified as Billy Wilson) holding an American flag and holding a sword to Davis' throat. The second, entitled "Robbery of the National Apple Orchard," pits Davis against Colonel Ellsworth. Davis is illustrated upon a high branch of a tree, while Ellsworth demands him to come down. The caption reads, "Col Ellsworth: 'I saw Jeff, drop those apples and come down.' Jeff. Davis: 'Are those the New York Fire Zouaves? Please don’t let 'em shoot, I'll surrender. I only wanted to be let Alone'."

A similar political to the Orchard CDV was created by "Harper's Weekly", showing Abraham Lincoln (rather than Ellsworth) holding a rifle and ordering Jefferson Davis to drop the apples he has been stealing. This cartoon was published several weeks after the first battle of the Civil War. It is unknown which version came first, as Colonel Ellsworth was killed on May 24, 1861, during the Union Army's take-over of Alexandria - making him the first Union casualty of the war.
