Longstreet, Mahone & Anderson Endorsed Letter to Robert E. Lee, 1863

A partial letter addressed to General Robert E. Lee, endorsed by Generals Longstreet, Mahone, and Anderson. 2pp (front and back), measuring 8.5" x 2.75", N.p., dated January 1, 1863. Written by George T. Rogers, inquiring about scheduling the sentencing of Private Jehu Shiveley who was Court Martialed. On verso, the letter has been endorsed by "William Mahone Brig Genl", "R. H. Anderson Maj. Genl. Comdg. Div.", and "J Longstreet Lieut. Genl. Comdg. N Va." With mail folds and creasing throughout. Small hole at the top from ink burn. Faint soiling throughout. Boldly signed by all.

A fantastic example of an official request being forwarded up through the chain of command. William Mahone was Brigadier General commanding one of Anderson's Brigades, Richard H. Anderson was Major General Commanding one of Longstreet's Divisions, and James Longstreet was the Lieutenant General Commanding the 1st Corps.

This official request was written two weeks following the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 11, 1862. Private Jehu Shiveley had deserted his unit on the 2nd of June, 1862, just one month after being mustered into Company A of the 6th Virginia. He returned four months later and was promptly arrested, with his Court Martial taking place in October. Shiveley's sentence was two months of hard labor, but due to several battles and skirmishes, his sentence was postponed. Therefore it wasn't until New Years that his punishment could finally be reviewed. Private Shiveley remained with the Confederate Army and was wounded while on picket duty in 1864. He survived the war and would be at Appomattox Court House along with Generals Lee, Longstreet, Anderson, and Mahone during the April 9th, 1865 surrender.
