Description

Epic Records 1970s label award for The O'Jays album Survival. The album contained the hits the "Give the People What They Want", which topped the Billboard R&B Singles chart, and "Let Me Make Love to You", which reached #10 on the chart. The album itself topped the Billboard Top Soul Albums chart.

This is a label award from Epic Records celebrating sales of over 500,000 copies presented to Sherry Santifer who became the first female, African American promotions manager for CBS Records - New York and New Jersey. She also worked with Earth, Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Carole King, Redbone, Minnie Ripperton, The O'Jays and many others. It's likely the award was made in 1975-76 based on the fact that the RIAA did in fact certify it at Gold (500,000 copies sold) in mid-1975.

Item Highlights:

  • Epic Records sales award for The O'Jays album Survival selling over 500,000 copies (Note: Not a RIAA award)

  • Presented to record promotions executive
  • Estimated to have been made in 1975-76
  • In Good to VG condition (has frame wear and mars on plexiglass)
  • Has been rebacked
  • Award measures approx. 17" x 21"
  • Great collector's item for any fan of The O'Jays

Notes on the condition of all vintage record awards like this one: Please do not buy this item if you want a brand new piece of memorabilia. These are historical artifacts from the year they were produced. As a result they may show signs of wear. Frankly, if you see a 20 to 50-year-old award purported to be in 100% perfect condition, it might be too good to be true. After all, an antique should have "good' wear. If not, you might want to question the piece.

As to where they came from, they could have been displayed in record label offices, recording studios, artist manager's offices, radio stations, private collector's homes and yes, of course, possibly the artist's or songwriter's home. Typically, we don't know all the places they may have been over the years other than what we've stated in the description.
