Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Chiribaya culture, ca. 700 to 1500 CE. A vibrant and dynamic textile sash comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama) fibers in vivid hues of crimson, jade, navy, wheat, and cream. The sash is decorated with ten abstract mask-like faces with spiralized eyes, triangular ears, and rhombus-shaped mouths, all presented atop a red ground. A beautiful example from the Chiribaya that is mounted on black cloth backing, perfect for framing! Size (textile): 29.625" L x 4" W (75.2 cm x 10.2 cm); size (backing): 46.25" L x 26.5" W (117.5 cm x 67.3 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950 to 1960s
