Description
19th Century Ex-Voto featuring iconography of the Crucifixion, Santa Muerte, Saint Peter, Adam and Eve, and more
Oil on tin, framed.
This is a truly fascinating Ex-Voto and Link is ecstatic to put it up for auction.
This piece appears to be a plea to have the two named couples have their souls saved after death. Martin Hernandez and Jacinto Hernandez are the two named men (probably brothers, possibly a father and son) wearing moustaches and goatees, on the left; and the two women on the right are named as Juliana Meoia and Francisca Morno, probably their wives. The four donors do not wear clothing, all four of them have long hair, and they kneel in an act of supplication with their hands held in prayer facing the Crucifix, as they burn in individual flames surrounding their "sinning" bodies. On the top of the cross is Saint Peter among circular clouds, holding the keys of Heaven, about to give final judgment, or perhaps to pass on this task to God. Many spiritual and pagan objects appear: the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove hovering above Jesus), the Sun and the Moon, three dice, a gold bag of money, a hammer, a chalice, a ladder, a candlestick, stars, various metal-crafted tools, miscellaneous esoteric symbols, a shining monstrance and an angel appearing out of clouds weighing souls on her balance just below Santa Muerte, and more.
