Initialed and dated in oil and titled in pencil, verso.Provenance: Private collection, Miami; Christie's, New York, July 17, 2012, sale 2573, lot 182; private collection, New York. Exhibited: Arnold Herstand and Company, New York, Surrealism: from Paris to New York, May 12-July 31, 1990, with the label.Morris (born 1928) studied zoology at Oxford and began his career in the television industry. During the 1950s, he studied the picture-making abilities of apes and both created and hosted several television programs on zoology topics for Granada TV, London. Morris wrote The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal, 1967, and also became an accomplished artist with a Surrealist style, exhibiting his work at the Taurus Gallery, Oxford.
