Description
A carved wooden dance mask with highly stylized facial features, heavy lidded eyes and incised designs. Mbuya village masks are used to entertain a community during traditional ceremonies. Once used during mukanda initiation ceremonies to mark the end of male circumcision rituals, mbuya masquerades are now used to highlight a number of characters and roles in Pende society. This mask has been painted black and measures 12 inches tall ( 16 inches tall on professional display stand that will be included) Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, Maryland.
