Four Japanese Woodblock Senso-e Print Triptychs of Naval Battles

Meiji period (1868-1912), includes four woodblock print triptychs, the first by Bairin, the second by Minehide, the third by Okura Koto, and the fourth by Utagawa Kokunimasa, two triptychs presented loose; one with sheets secured to each other at edge, and two triptychs presented loose but secured at top left and right corners of each sheet to paper folder.
Sheet size 14 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.
Senso-e, literally "war pictures," are a particularly dramatic form of Japanese woodblock print that emerged as a style of reportage during the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, and went on to become a widespread and popular way of disseminating patriotic imagery during the Meiji period of the Sino-Japanese war and Russo-Japanese war.
