This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 32c Aichi D1A2 stamp issued November 1, 1996. The Japanese Aichi D1A2 was a two-seat carrier-borne dive-bomber used actively throughout the second Sino-Japanese conflict of 1937. On December 12 of that year, the D1A2 became infamous for its participation in an attack that sank the U.S. Navy gunboat Panay on the Yangtze River. Code-named "SUSIE" by the Allies, the D1A2 participated in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
