Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, Holyland, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE; late Imperial period, Eastern Empire, ca. 4th century CE. A pretty pair of ancient Roman vessels: a 4th-century glass cup and a 1st-century pottery unguentarium. Enveloped in gorgeous violet and rainbow iridescence, the cup or beaker is mold-formed from light blue-green glass and adorned with decorative turquoise-hued dots along the slanted walls and an incised band encircling the flared rim. This type of glass ornamentation was particularly popular in late Roman times and vessels like this have been found both in the East and along the Rhine frontier in Germany. Alternatively, the pottery unguentarium displays a slender, piriform body with a towering neck and flared rim, all sitting upon a planar base. A wonderful pair of Roman utilitarian objects! Size of larger (unguentarium): 1.5" Diameter x 5.2" H (3.8 cm x 13.2 cm)
Provenance: ex-Pineville, Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired February 19, 2023; ex-estate of Jack R. Bershad, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Condition
Both have expected surface wear, but are otherwise intact and excellent. Glass has lovely iridescence and rich weathering film; unguentarium has rich earthen deposits to surface. Blue blobs on glass have been cleaned to highlight color; cleaning process may have created slight faceted appearance on some.
