An Ottoman mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell-inlaid wood casket, Turkey, 18th/19th Century
of rectangular form on four feet, inlaid with tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl with repeat panels of geometric designs, the hinged lid decorated with a central panel of arabesques, with velvet lined interior and rectangular mirror to interior of lid, remains of old collection label to base; and three Ottoman gilt silver zarfs with Russian porcelain inserts by Kuznetsov, a pair of Ottoman silver dishes and an Indian silver rosewater sprinkler
the casket 34 x 24 x 20.5 cm.(10)
Footnotes:
Provenance
Property from a Royal Collection.
The use of mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell was prevalent within the Ottoman Empire by the second half of the sixteenth century. This technique of inlaying mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell reached a high standard under the Ottoman Turks after the establishment of a court workshop that specialised in mother-of-pearl inlay. Employing such materials serves to reflect the increased Ottoman presence within the Indian Ocean following their defeat of the Mamluks. For a similar casket sold at Bonhams, London, see Islamic and Indian Art, 25 April 2017, Lot 141.
