Item Details
Description
This lot contains books by authors such as James Caufield, William Morris, Andre Maurois, James Bacon, Oliver Goldsmith, and M. Louis Antoine Fauvelet de Bourrienne (Napoleon's private secretary). The Life of Napoleon Bonaparte by Bourrienne was published by Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley in 1831. It is a three volume set, and contains various engravings. The Life and Times of Francis the First, King of France is a two volume set that was published by Edward Bull in 1829. The Miscellaneous Works of Oliver Goldsmith, M.B., is a four volume set, which was published in 1812 for only twenty people. Byron by Andre Maurois is comprised of two volumes that were published in 1931 by the Émile-Paul Frères (Brothers). The series was rebound as hardcovers, but the original covers are contained as the endpapers. The two volume set of The Well at the World's End, a Tale by Wiliam Morris were published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1896. The cover of the first volume is starting to detach. The four volume series of the Portraits, Memoirs, and Characters, of Remarkable Persons, from the Revolution in 1688 to the End of the Reign of George II by James Caufield was published by H.R. Young and T.H. Whitely in 1819. It contains illustrations by George Cruikshank. The cover and spine of the first volume have disconnected from the binding. The fourth volume is exhibiting signs of the same fate. Besides the damage noted, the lot shows signs of use to the exterior and foxing (especially around the engravings). There are various pencil scribbles as well. The first volume by Bourrienne has a newspaper article about the destruction of Napoleon's Parisian apartment being torn down that has oxidized its neighboring pages. In-house Shipping is Available.
