Diana Rigg Signed "Mother Love"-Era Passport With "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"-Era Union Card

A small archive of ephemera relating to Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg (1938-2020), the British stage, television, and film actress better known by her stage name Diana Rigg. The archive includes a signed and used British passport, ca. 1983-1993, encompassing the period when Rigg starred as Helen Vesey in the disturbing British television drama "Mother Love." Also included are three items relating to Rigg's membership in the British Actors' Equity Association, ca. 1969, when Rigg appeared in the sixth James Bond vehicle "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Provenance: From the Estate of Diana Rigg.

The lot includes:

1. A used and canceled British Passport, passport number 981911 D, issued to "Miss E.D.E. Rigg" on May 19, 1983 and expiring on May 19, 1993. Rigg has boldly signed the passport as "Diana Rigg" on p. 2, and a 2" square black and white passport photo of the actress has been embossed, sealed, and mounted on p. 3. Expected wear including minor page curling. The upper right corner of the passport has been cropped, and the passport has been stamped "Cancelled" on multiple pages. Else very good to near fine. 4" x 6."

In the passport's Description section, Rigg's occupation is listed as an "Actress." It lists her height as well as a distinguishing feature, a scar on her left wrist. The passport includes dozens of immigration hand stamps and two full-page temporary visas to Australia (p. 17) and the United States (p. 29). Rigg traveled widely during this period, as her passport demonstrates. From 1985-1993, she visited the Caribbean (Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, etc.); Asia (Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, etc.); Canada; Australia; South Africa; Egypt; and the United States (Boston, Chicago, Miami, etc.) Some of the hand-stamps reference Rigg's sponsors, and various production companies such as WGBH Educational Foundation (Boston).

2. A British Actors' Equity Association membership card issued to Diana Rigg on August 29, 1969, and valid until December 31, 1969. Rigg's name and membership number are listed within as "Diana Rigg 36546." Partly printed and partly handwritten on blue stock paper. Expected wear including some paperclip impressions, else near fine. Folded measures 3.5" x 3."

3. A handwritten note dated August 29, 1969 addressed to Diana Rigg regarding her British Actors' Equity Association membership.

4. A British Actors' Equity Association card holder, in dark blue soft plastic, with plastic protectors.

The British Actors' Equity Association, today known as Equity, is an entertainment industry and performing arts trade union that was established in the United Kingdom in 1930.

Diana Rigg is perhaps best remembered for her portrayal of Emma Peel in the British spy television series "The Avengers," but her acting career spanned over 50 years, until the 2020s. Nominated for over a dozen different acting awards, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Rebecca" (1997), a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress in "Mother Love" (1990), and a Tony Award for Best Actress in "Medea" (1994).
