William Shatner Handwritten Signed Essay, His Hanukkah Memories
AMS
William Shatner (b.1931). Autograph Manuscript Signed, "William Shatner - Capt. Kirk a Proud Jew", 1p, on his embossed personal stationery, 7.25" x 10.5", no place, no date. Entitled "Some Hanukkah Memories", Shatner describes his childhood memories of growing up Jewish. In near fine condition.
In full:
"First of all I want to say I recently released a Holiday Album - I was going to do 'Dreidel Dreidel' but I thought better of it. I mean I should have, maybe. I was born in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace area of Montreal, Quebec Canada to a Conservative Jewish household. My Paternal Grandfather Wolfe Schattner anglicized the family name to Shatner. All of my four grandparents were Jewish immigrants - they came from the Austria-Hungary and Russian Empires from locations of present day Ukraine and Lithuania. Third, during my childhood, the menorah was silver and blackened a little by years of use. It was something that just sat somewhere on the mantelpiece all year long until it was used, and then it was used with just reverance. Fourth, my mother standing over the frying pan, pouring a mixture of potatoes; the sound of potatoes into the sizzling fat - the oil - and frying up potato pancakes. The memory of those potato pancakes and the applesauce and the family all around eating the pancakes - is indelible. Happy Hanukkah".
