"The Adventures of Gil Blas" is a picaresque novel by the French author Alain-René Lesage. The novel was first published in the early 18th century and quickly became popular in France and throughout Europe. It follows the adventures of the title character, Gil Blas, a young man from humble origins who rises through the ranks of society by working as a valet, clerk, and even as a member of the clergy. The novel is notable for its satirical commentary on the social and political issues of the time, as well as its richly drawn characters and lively narrative style. The two-volume edition published by Effingham Wilson in 1833 is a well-regarded edition of the novel, with an introduction by the English writer William Makepeace Thackeray.
