Description
Walter Addison, New York, 1914-1982. A composition sculpture of a Blue Heron, signed Addison at base, circa 1950-70. Measures 56 3/4"H x 20"D x 7"W. According to family, the heron were frequent visitors to the stream boarding the Addison cottage in Washington Depot CT, so Mr. Addison would make sketches of them and finally made this sculpture which remained in their residence until last year. His daughter provided the details on how this bird was constructed: First a plaster mold was made, then a composition of fiberglass and other materials were poured into the form - once cured, a plaster coating was placed over it and carved with the fine details you see in the photos - lastly, it was painted. This lot will also include sketches of this heron. Provenance: Consigned by family. All artwork was found in his cottage in Washington Depot, Connecticut, on the banks of the Shepaug River, where he lived with his wife Rhoda from 1965 until his death in 1982.
