Item Details
Description
THE HOLY BIBLE. Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1810. 10.75" x 8.25". Text missing some leaves and some portions bound out of place. With two leaves containing manuscript genealogical entries of the Hopkins family beginning in the early 1800s. This copy with 9 maps (of 10?), 4 of which are folding, and 20 plates. Also bound with an 1806 concordance printed in New York (at rear.) Rebound in modern calf. SOLD WITH another copy of the same but being an 1812 edition (same imprint as above), also with some plates/maps but fewer than observed in the above copy; with manuscript genealogical records of the Caleb Moss family beginning in 1824. Period calf, contents and binding with defects (the other copy in better condition.) Both are King James, or Authorized, versions. *********** Printer Mathew Carey was born in Ireland, but he got into trouble over his stance on the Irish penal code. He would flee to Paris as a refugee, and there he would meet Benjamin Franklin (for whom Carey would work for a time.) Carey would eventually make his way to Pennsylvania and set up his publishing business in the mid 1780s.
Condition
Sold as a pair, as-is with all faults. Both with some foxing, toning, staining and various similar flaws (mostly typical types of flaws), neither fully collated though plates were counted in the earlier edition at which time some defects of text were observed (as noted in the description.)
