An 1884 letter from Mr. John Quarstein, Curator of the War Memorial Museum, Newport News, Virginia " probably one of the following military leaders of the South American Republic's Revolution from Spain. Simon Bolivar (Venezuela), Jose de San Martin (Argentina), Francisco de Miranda (Venequela)...Bernardo O'Higgins (Chile) and Antonio Jose de Sucre (Venezuela). All men were generals and significant enough to warrant a painting of this style..."
Another 1984 letter from University Art Collections, Arizona State states sitter possible "...either Bolivar or San Martin...it was entirely unlikely to be of US or English origin."
