GEORGIAN ENGLISH STERLING SILVER SNUFF / OTHER BOXES, LOT OF TWO, comprising a cowrie shell snuff box with "CF" maker's mark probably for Crispin Fuller of London and an "E" date mark for 1800 having a sterling rim and lid having engraved period "RL" initials below later "AM" initials, and an elongated snuff or toothpick box by Samuel Pemberton of Birmingham having a "U" date mark for 1792 featuring all-over engraved decoration to exterior. Each impressed with a maker's mark and three or four hallmarks including a lion passant mark for sterling fineness, a city mark, a date mark, and/or a King George III duty mark. Total weight of Pemberton box: 0.955 ozt. Late 18th/early 19th century. Cowrie shell box 2 3/4" x 3 1/2" x 1 3/4" OA.
Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections, care, preservation, and future acquisitions.
Condition
Good to very good overall condition with some wear, surface scratches, and nicks; cowrie box with some denting to lid; Pemberton box with some worn spots to engraving, base with residue/surface loss due to removed accession number.
