Anna Richards Brewster (American, 1870-1952). "Country House near Exeter, England", c.1895- 1900. Oil on board. Unsigned. Title with dates on Winthrop Gallery, Indianapolis, IN gallery label verso. Dimensions: 5” x 7’; framed: 9 ½” x 11”. Condition: Good, housed in period frame. Exeter is a cathedral city and the country town of Devon on the River Exe. Originally a Roman town, it became well known religious center in the Middle Ages because of the Exeter, Cathedral. Anna Richards Brewster is the daughter of William Trost Richards, but she earned a prestigious reputation on her own. Trained under her father, she exhibited at the National Academy in NYC at age 14. Later studied with W. Merritt Chase & LaFarge. Art historian, Leigh Culver, dedicated a chapter in the 2017 publication Anna Richards Brewster American Impressionist as to the important body of work completed by ARB during her time in Great Britain. A recent auction sale of her painting of William Trost Richards at Lake Placid brought $140,000
