F. Usher DeVoll (American, 1873 – 1941). "New York City Harbor II". Pastel on paper. Dimensions:11.5” x 15”. Framed under glass. Nothing is as spectacular as the New York City skyline at night. This iconic image was created by F. Usher DeVoll as he would take the Staten Island Ferry back and forth over the harbor. Following in the tradition of James Mc Neil Whistler, DeVoll mastered the challenge of painting the night sky. While DeVoll made Rhode Island his home, he is best known for his paintings of New York City street and harbor scenes. Frequently he would travel to the empire city huddling along its doorways and riding the Staten Island Ferry to capture the city from the perspective of its’ every day inhabitants. Exhibiting them at the Grand Central Galleries. F. Usher DeVoll is one of those many important American painters who is enjoying a resurgence of interest by collectors and researchers alike. Born in Providence, he was a graduate of RISD in 1897 and went on to study at the Art Students League with W.M. Chase and R. Henri. Some time was also spent studying with Laurens in Paris.
