Description
Joe Norman, (American, b. 1957). Untitled from "Slum Fantasies Series", 1990. Graphite on Paper. Signed lower right. Dated and inscribed “CR” lower left. Dimensions 7” x 10". Framed under plexiglass. "Slum Fantasy" was a series created by Norman in 1990 based upon the slums of Costa Rica. The series was exhibited at Providence College with a catalogue written by Dr. Deborah Johnson. Widely considered the most important African American lithographer of his generation, master draughtsman Joseph Norman has sought to retell hidden, muted, or silenced stories of the African American experience. His expressive work and use of symbolic motifs communicate a vivid sense of place, history, struggle and hope. Norman is a Professor of Art at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia where has also served as the Chairman of the Painting and Drawing Department and Founder of Study Abroad in Latin America, Cuba, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. A world class draftsman and printmaker, he has works of art in museum collections around the country, including the MoMA, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the RISD Museum among others.
