Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Asmat or Nakanai culture, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fantastic example of a parrying shield; tall and slender with painted motifs. The verso has a cutout rectangular area that forms a handle, and the obverse face as a thick central "boss" the protrudes a few inches outward from the rest of the panel. Painted on the shield are scrolling motifs and repeated concentric diamond / linear patterns. Shields ere used for parrying blows during warfare and during peacetime for ceremonial dances. Size: 8.5" L x 3" W x 68.5" H (21.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 174 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition
Old inactive insect bore holes throughout. Stable pressure fissures throughout, chipping and abrasions to peripheries with some minor losses to lower corners. Fading to pigments. Overall good condition and sturdy!
