A wonderful book by Sir William Gell (British, 1777-1836) and John Peter Gandy (British, 1787-1850) entitled "Vues des Ruines de Pompei" and published by Firmin Didot in Paris in 1827. Covered in cardstock, this is the French edition of the book "Pompeiana: The Topography of Edifices and Ornaments of Pompeii," which was originally published by the authors in London in 1819. The impressive codex is comprised of French text and illustrated plates detailing the current archeological findings in Pompeii. "Pompeiana" is the best-known work by Sir William Gell, who was a British archeologist and illustrator that is considered a founder of the study of the historical topography of ancient Rome. Size: 11" L x 1.8" W x 14.4" H (27.9 cm x 4.6 cm x 36.6 cm)

Condition
Missing some pages and 67 plates. Total of 58 plates in the book. Cover is detached from pages with back cover torn from spine and front, as well as bending and tearing to corners and peripheries. Some tearing, wrinkling, and foxing to pages. Remaining text and plates are well preserved and clear.
