Description
*NO SHIPPING* Pick-up or buyer-arranged transport only. This is an original two-sided wooden carriage roof board that fit above the windows of the train car to show the name or route of the train. Each coach had brackets into which these signs fitted. It is 11' long, 5" tall, and 1/2" wide. On one side, it reads "London - Liverpool" and the other side reads "The Manxman." The Manxman was a passenger train that traveled from London (Euston) to Liverpool (Lime Street) where it linked with the ferry to the Isle of Man. The summer-only route was active from 1927-39 and again 1951-66. It was mostly used by Londoners taking holiday on the Isle of Man. This original sign hung for years in the famous and iconic Green Door Tavern in Chicago. (The term Manxman refers to an inhabitant of the Isle of Man.)
