Jacob Lawrence was an American painter, educator, and storyteller who lived from 1917 to 2000. He was one of the most prominent artists of the 20th century, known for his narrative paintings that depicted the struggles and triumphs of African Americans.
Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lawrence moved with his family to Harlem, New York when he was a child. He began his artistic education at the Harlem Art Workshop, and later studied at the American Artists School under the tutelage of the painter Charles Alston.
Lawrence's most famous works are his "Migration Series," a collection of 60 paintings that depict the mass movement of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North during the early 20th century. The series was completed in 1941 and is now considered a masterpiece of American art.
Throughout his career, Lawrence was recognized with numerous awards and honors, including a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000, the highest civilian honor in the United States. His works are held in the collections of major museums throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
