Corita Kent (1918-1986) was an American artist, educator, and activist known for her vibrant, pop-inspired serigraphs (silkscreen prints) and her role as a transformative figure in the world of graphic design. She was also a Roman Catholic nun, and her work often explored themes of spirituality, social justice, and the power of love and hope.
Kent was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa and grew up in Los Angeles, California. She entered the Roman Catholic order of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1936 and took the name Sister Mary Corita. She earned a degree in art from Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles in 1941, and went on to teach art at the college for more than 20 years.
In the 1960s, Kent's work became associated with the Pop Art movement, and she began to incorporate advertising slogans and popular culture references into her prints. Her work often featured bold, colorful lettering and vibrant imagery, and was inspired by a wide range of sources, from the Bible to the Beatles.
Throughout her career, Kent was a vocal advocate for social justice, and her work often addressed issues such as poverty, racism, and war. She was also a supporter of the peace movement and a vocal critic of the Vietnam War.
Kent's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, and she has been the subject of numerous books and documentaries. Her legacy continues to inspire artists, designers, and activists today.
