Item Details
Description
Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist. She was the first female war correspondent and the first woman to be allowed to work in combat zones during World War II. Bourke-White's photography covered a wide range of subjects, including architecture, industry, and social issues. She worked for several major publications, including Life magazine, and her photographs were known for their dramatic composition and use of light and shadow.
Bourke-White was also a pioneering female photographer, breaking gender barriers in the field. She began her career as a commercial photographer and was known for her industrial photographs of factories and machinery. Later, she shifted her focus to social issues, documenting poverty and social injustice in the United States during the Great Depression.
Bourke-White's most famous photographs include the portrait of Mohandas Gandhi and the iconic photograph of the Fort Peck Dam during its construction in Montana. Her photographs captured the human experience in times of war and peace, and her work continues to inspire photographers and photojournalists today.
