Description
A modernistic and colorful steet scene of a "Market Place in St. Tropez", France. 6 1/4 in. x 6 1/4 in. sight, framed to 14 1/4 in. x 14 in., signed lower right, titled lower left. Julius Lars Hoftrup was born in Skane Sweden in 1874 and immigrated to a farm in New York 1881. He left farming to become an artist. For many years he lived in New York City where he also studied at the Cooper Union Art School, and later made study trips to Canada, France and North Afica. He died in Elmira, NY in 1954. He most noted for his street scenes, landscapes and mural painting. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions including the Pennsylania Academy of Fine Art, the Phillips Memorial Gallery, Washington, D.C., The Cleveland Museum and the Brooklyn Museum.
