Ferdinand lived with the family of the then famous ivory carver Philipp Willmann, where he trained to be an ivory carver. In 190, he left Willmann's workshop and travelled to Milan, Rome and Paris. He earned his living as a modeler then studied a great deal in Paris, working with Professor Poertyle in Berlin.
