Description
A FEDERAL HEPPLEWHITE INLAID FLAME MAHOGANY BOOKCASE SECRETARY, AMERICAN, 1790s-1830s, attributed Massachusetts craftsmanship, likely Boston and Salem local, the central string inlaid tablet crest with brass eagle finial joined by restrained flat swag-like curved crown with urn finals over a molded and flat fascia and two cupboard doors with Gothic revival mullioned glazed lancet windows revealing a shelved interior above two small string inlaid drawers with faux keyholes to a fold out green baize lined writing surface resting over two pocket arms, flanking a short drawer over two long drawers with bookmatched, cockbeaded, and string inlaid facades, raised on later added ogee feet joined by a point and serpentine skirt centering a rectangular tablet with zigzag string inlay. Height: 80" Width: 37 1/4" Depth: 18 1/8" Provenance: The Green Bottle, a handwritten note card, 701 Colquitt St., Houston, Texas, 1990s. Secondary woods: birch and maple; Estate of Mr. And Mrs. Thomas Dunaway Anderson, River Oaks, Texas.
Condition
Dents, dings, scratches, hole to green baize, dust, debris, all glass replaced with apparent repairs and restoration. Everything from the base of bottom drawer replaced and likely not original. - Added hardware from 1916 to join back. Replaced handles and hardware. Later added/fitted with escutcheons and locks. - some interrupt to string inlay and are now with faux keyholes, more specifically without actual locks on the small drawers. Veneer repair and replacement. Apparent good restorations.
