Description
A PAIR OF NATIVE AMERICAN PLAINS INDIAN BEADED AND QUILLED LEATHER "COYOTE TRACKS" MOCCASINS, PROBABLY SIOUX, LATE 19TH CENTURY, glass trade beads, red and yellow dyed quill, leather, thread, and sinew sewn. Height: 4" Width: 3 1/2" Depth: 10" A sinew bound sole is bordered by a lane of sky blue interspersed by square cobalt and yellow glass trade beads. The top with fifteen red quilled rows in an arrangement of clustered groups of three centering cross-form yellow and white "coyote tracks" symbols, spaced by two plain red lines each, and with a folded sewn ankle cuff. The pair attributed for use by a male person and measure approximately ten inches in length.
Condition
The leather has dried and their are associated splits and cracks. The tongue of the left moccasin has torn off, but the piece is still present. The bead work is stable with no major losses or repairs.
